Australia

*Australian and New Zealand Society of the History of Medicine
Founded in 1986 and incorporated in Victoria, the Society promotes the academic study of the history of health sciences within the Australasian region.
The site includes the biannual Journal Health & History, which is a peer reviewed publication of original papers and research. There is also a quarterly newsletter and a major conference is held every two years.

A short article from the Australian nursing journal recounting nurses' personal experiences of the Vietnam War.
*Australian Nursing & Midwifery History Project.
The ANMHP is a self-funding autonomous project hosted by the School of Nursing, at the University of Melbourne. The Australian Nursing History and Midwifery Project provides a highly visible and accessible forum to promote the conservation of nursing's and midwifery's historical heritage, to develop community awareness of the role of nursing and midwifery history in the development of modern health care services, and to foster historical scholarship on nursing and midwifery. *Digger history - Royal Australian Army Nurses Services - RAANS
An unofficial history of the Australia and New Zealand Armed forces - includes information on nurses role in war. "Choose a link from the list and pay tribute to the "Sisters" and the blokes that make up all the medical and medical support units". A searchable site which includes information on outstanding nurses Edith Cavell & Vivian Bullwinkle among others.

"Based in the University of Sydney, the Unit provides a focus for nursing history within New South Wales and, through linkages with other organisations and individuals, across Australia."

*A Selection of Letters Written by Florence Nightingale
A site produced by the Clendening History of Medicine Library providing a selection of Nightingale's correspondence from 1854-1897.
*American Association for the History of Nursing
The website of a professional organisation open to anyone interested in the history of nursing. Contains mostly information about the organisation, however there are comprehensive links to other history of nursing sites.
*An 1895 look at Nursing
An extract from an anonymously written book from 1895 titled Ambulance work and nursing: a handbook on first aid to the injured with a section on nursing, etc. A fascinating look at how far nursing as a profession and "women's work" in general have come in the past century.
*Army Nurse Corps History
This site traces the history of the (US) Army Nurse Corps in text and photographs. It looks at the nursing experience in the Spanish American War, World Wars I and II and the Korean War.
*Barbara Bates Center for the Study of Nursing History
Although much of the content at this site is of local interest only, it is worth visiting for its fascinating historical photo gallery of nurses.

A bibliography and guide to web resources on black nurses in the US and their fight to gain professional recognition.

*Center for Nursing Historical Inquiry
"The Center for Nursing Historical Inquiry, established at the University of Virginia in 1991 to support historical scholarship in nursing, is dedicated to the preservation and study of nursing history in the United States."
*Country Joe McDonald's Tribute to Florence Nightingale
A website by Country Joe McDonald, a song writer from Berkeley, US who became interested in Florence Nightingale and the history of nursing after attending a seminar for Vietnam veterans. Site contains historical timeline and nursing historian Adelaide Nutting's summation of Nightingale's life and work as well as related sites.
*Nursing Information Access
A website by Margaret (Peg) Allen includes her paper 'Celebrating nursing history : what to keep' which is an excellent guide for librarians to use when weeding nursing and midwifery collections. Margaret is researching the question of what books should be kept as historical resources in libraries serving nursing populations. Includes list significant book titles, periodicals, video and film. The site is hosted by the Nursing and Allied Health Resources Section of the Medical Library Association, UK.
*Florence Nightingale Museum Web Site
The Museum (located in London, UK) has produced a website with a comprehensive biography of Florence Nightingale (with photographs), a bibliography of her own writings, fulltext research articles about her and her work and links to other Florence Nightingale websites.
*History of nursing archives
Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center at Boston University - "contains the personal and professional papers of nursing leaders; records of the schools of nursing; public health and professional nursing organizations; histories of various American and foreign schools of nursing, including early textbooks; as well as a very extensive book collection."
*History of Nursing Resource Guide
Virginia Commonwealth University Libraries have compiled a comprehensive list of nursing history resources and links.
*Images from the History of Medicine
This National Library of Medicine website provides access to nearly 60,000 images illustrating the social and historical aspects of medicine.
*UK Centre for the History of Nursing and Midwifery- UKCHNM
The Centre is dedicated to research and education in the history of nursing and midwifery. It is based at the University of Manchester and acts in collaboration with the Royal College of Nursing Archives and the Royal College of Nursing History of Nursing Society. The Website offers a number of resources, including online papers, information on forthcoming events, details of theses and dissertations and information about MPhil/PhD supervision
